The early 80's. I arrived in New York at Grand Central after 8 months in Quebec City where I had acted as organizer for CKRL, 89,1's 10th anniversary's Radiothon the first Community Radio Station in Canada. I was eager to get back to Manhattan. Got into a cab and went straight to this new club my friend Billy I had met in Boston a couple of years earlier had told me about that was opening that night: the Pyramid Club, in the East Village. The Pyramid was to become a boiling pot of creativity, incubating new work by up and coming artists and wild people from dance, theater, music, film, stand up, all mixed together. I danced with the Trocadero Ballet there and unfortunately have no pictures of this wonderful romp nor any of the Pyramid at all actually. We didn't have cellphones back then...
John Jesurun's was one of the wild creators at the time (still is) and came up with Chang in a Void Moon which you could go and watch an episode of every Monday night. I loved it. John Kelley, Frank Maya, Blackeyed Susan, Steve Bushemi and so many more great artists were in it. This was 1983 or was it 82? Hm... Well, it is only years later that I got to be part in it. It was a true honor and pure joy. First at The Kitchen (no pictures here either), then at La Mama etc. (only the last three) and later on at St-Marks Theater in 2013.
